🏆 2018 Finalist in Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas Awards
Role: Project Management, Data Analysis, UX Design, UI Design, Front End Dev
Homelessness in the United States is a complex issue — often almost as difficult to talk about as it is to solve. Misleading stereotypes about the population, a lack of coordinated and easily accessible data on this population, and the simple overwhelming nature of the problem all contribute to make it hard to know where to begin.
Understand Homelessness is a website that offers hope in the midst of these challenges, by providing clarity, vocabulary, visuals, and solutions to encourage progress. A one-page primer on homelessness provides a basic overview of the problem to overcome misconceptions, while a data visualization maps the problem in an accessible, exploratory way. A set of strategies provides over 80 examples of tactics that organizations and individuals are testing nationwide to deal with the problem of homelessness, presented in a filterable page that’s intended to be an inspiring place to know where to start.
This project was an exciting culmination of several of my skillsets: data wrangling and GIS mapping, infographic design, web development and user experience design, and project management. Launched in January 2017, this project has been featured in Fast Company, the Atlantic’s CityLab, Mashable, and Planetizen.
